While childcare in the UK is taken for granted if parents are to continue in employment, for families in Nairobi’s informal settlements it is impossible for most, so that they are trapped in a cycle of poverty, unable to work to feed their children.
Event industry foundation Meeting Needs has stepped in to help with a grant of £5000 to provide food for a day care centre as part of a two-year programme working with Tushinde Children’s Trust´s Family Support project. This is a vital component of their family support programme that enables mothers and carers to enter the workforce, build sustainable livelihoods and secure a brighter future for their children.
The entire project will provide six day centres through a two-year programme from stabilization to independence. The total cost of the programme will be £125,242.
Meeting Needs has worked with Tushinde Children`s Trust previously. Foundation trustee David Dodgeon said: “This is a charity that is doing some very good work on the ground in Kenya and meets our principle financial criteria for donations. The entire project will have a profound effect on the life chances of many families and children, in particular, for a relatively modest contribution.”
