Event industry foundation Meeting Needs has agreed to fund the development of a community library at Makhetha Primary School in Blantyre District, Malawi, as part of the Luc’s Libraries programme at a cost of £4,000.
Jacaranda UK Foundation has already already successfully delivered 19 libraries. This project will transform an unused building into a safe, inclusive learning space where children and adults can access books, study and improve literacy. Managed by the community and supported by Jacaranda’s established library network, the project will deliver a sustainable resource for education and learning.
The price of £4,000 will include the refurbishment of the building including materials and labour, furniture and bookshelves, books, monitoring, evaluation and project management.
This is the second grant provided to Jacaranda Foundation by Meeting Needs – solar power was installed throughout the school in December 2024.
Jacaranda UK Foundation was established to help provide free education and healthcare to Malawian children, particularly those who have been orphaned by AIDS, through the Jacaranda School for Orphans, in Limbe. Jacaranda UK Foundation has helped implement several projects, including providing textbooks, school uniforms and support with teachers’ salaries; support to the Jacaranda Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Clinic for disabled children, community outreach projects, including literacy, library and women’s entrepreneurship programmes; construction and development of the Jacaranda Vocational College, where students can learn practical skills like tailoring, carpentry, mechanics, catering, computer programming. The construction of a solar powered well to reduce costs and ensure uninterrupted water supply has also been completed.
