After having to use a field next to their school as their toilet, at last 240 children aged 4-6 will have access to modern toilets and handwashing stations at a school in Ethiopia, thanks to funding from Meeting Needs, the event industry charity.
Until now the children have only been able to use a field next door to the Kebele 20 Elementary School in Gondar, Ethiopia. The new project will build 6 toilets and 4 handwashing stations and is coordinated by UK-based charities Together We Learn and Children’s Voices in Action. Construction will be monitored by staff on a fortnightly basis and evidenced through photo reports.
The facilities will be age-appropriate, and accompanied by water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) education. This construction is part of a wider initiative supporting schools with establishing effective early learning settings. The project will cost £10,000 and will take eight months to complete. Five education staff will also benefit from the project while a further 60-80 children will benefit for every year with new child intakes.
Caroline Walker, CEO of Together We Learn, said: “This will improve children’s wellbeing and motivation in school. This will be measured through a series of survey questions to understand children’s emotional experiences of school, learning and using the bathrooms answered in a child-friendly manner”.
