Just two weeks before she and her three Worldspan colleagues were due to cycle the 100 km Liverpool Nightrider circuit to raise cash for event industry charity Meeting Needs, Chantel Courtney was on site in Bilbao running the 1000-delegate annual meeting of the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine (SESAM) when she broke her foot.
Now the remaining team members will cross The Mersey via the Mersey Tunnel to connect the Liverpool and Wirral loops overnight Saturday evening (tomorrow) without her. Sophie Morris, Kevin Miller and Sara Newbold, will have to take to the saddle without her. Sophie said: “She just slipped and lost her footing. To be honest she couldn’t have been with a better group of people (the delegates are made up of doctors and surgeons) and all the committee members kept coming to check on what had been done at the local hospital and checking the medicine she had been prescribed to see if they ‘approved’. In true Worldspan fashion she got her leg plastered and then ran the event with her leg raised in the event office, despite me telling her to stay at the hotel. Luckily we had quite a big team on site so we were able to allocate tasks to be covered”.
Of the ride tomorrow, she added: “The four of us are questioning our sanity but we believe in the charity and are committed to completing the challenge, regardless of the pain we will undoubtedly suffer from not having trained nearly enough. Sponsors’ contributions will help motivate us to keep going while cycling through Liverpool during the early hours.”
